Pieropan Soave Calvarino 2021 - DUTY PAID

pieropan calvarino - wimbledon wine cellar

96 Points – Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast, September 2023

The nose alone is worth finding a bottle, redolent with wildflowers, almonds, peaches and acacia honey. The sumptuous and expansive palate shows ripe apples, dried flowers and focused minerality that continues long after you drink the wine. Crisp acidity holds the wine in balance and will allow for long cellaring.

94 Points – Ned Goodwin, James Suckling.com May 2023

The 50th anniversary vintage. The first single vineyard white wine of Italy. Tuffeau and basalt. Calvarino is fermented in cement rather than the tank, as is used for the Classico. A broader sash of orchard fruits, verging toward toffee apple, mingle with ginger, orange blossom, rosemary, sage, almond and jasmine. 20-30% Trebbiano di Soave due to its affinity with volcanic soils. Saline and sappy, whilst also resinous and intense. A powerful wine that is paradoxically pixelated of detail, immensely saline and beautifully light on its feet. The sort of wine I challenge anyone not to love.

94 Points – Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter.com July 2023

According to Andrea Pieropan, the 2021 vintage was ?dry and warm at the end of the season. The grapes lost weight due to the evaporation.? Although production was down 10%, the parameters are not bad for a white wine: 6.1g/l total acidity and 3.22pH. A smorgasbord of aromas ranges from camomile to apricot, acacia flowers, fern, candied cedar and elderberry. Light, zesty and balanced by refined weight on the palate, it lasts in the mouth with a savoury aftertaste.

2021 Vintage Report

The 2021 vintage was of excellent quality, with 25% less production than 2020. The season started mild and dry, followed by abundant rainfall in December which helped build up water reserves. Prolonged below-average temperatures over the spring caused slow and stunted bud burst, followed by high temperatures in June which necessitated emergency irrigation in some vineyards. The variability of the weather in July affected flowering and fruit set, but August and early September proved much more stable, with warm and dry conditions that allowed the grapes to ripen fully prior to harvest.
