"Aromatic aromas of fresh citrus and grapefruit, giving way to a gorgeously dry, mineral, yet succulent and moreish palate..."
Famously home to one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world, those lucky enough to have visited this jewel of the Cyclades will know that the same volcano that created Santorini's dramatic caldera views, also created the volcanic soils that produce some of the world's most exquisitely fresh, crisp and mineral white wines, from indigenous grape Assyrtiko - such as the incredible 2015 Vassaltis Assyrtiko.
While there are a number of longer-established and more famous producers of Assyrtiko on the island, it's the younger generation represented by Vassaltis owner Yannis Valambous, who have been showing the passion and energy needed to drive quality to the level of the fine white Burgundies and Rhones that dominate the world stage.
As well as building the finest and most modern winery on the island, Yannis has also employed two of Santorini's best winemakers who, between them, have experience making wine in France, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand and the Greek mainland - as well as for some of the most renowned wineries elsewhere on Santorini. They really have taken the best ideas from around the world and applied them to Santorini's unique terroir.
While some Santorini Assyrtikos we've tasted tend to overdo the whole mineral/aromatic thing and end up rather inaccessible and austere, Vassaltis' style is appealingly soft and rounded - drinking like a fine Puligny-Montrachet - with the added twist of the classically dry, crisp, Assyrtiko finish.
Alluringly pale in colour, the 2015 Vassaltis Assyrtiko offers up aromatic aromas of fresh citrus and grapefruit, before giving way to a gorgeously dry, mineral, yet succulent and moreish palate, dripping with stone fruits, wet flint and volcanic terroir character.
