San Polino Brunello Montalcino Helichrysum 2018 - IN BOND

san polino brunello montalcino helichrysum - wimbledon wine cellar

The 2018 Helichrysum received an abundance of praise, yielding from vineyards around the San Polino winery, in the southeast of Montalcino. A delicate touch in winemaking, with pre-fermentation maceration to fix the colour and gentle daily pump-overs so as not to damage the delicate skins; perfume and sublime with layer after layer of enticing complexity.

“This has an intense and attractive nose of peach stones, wild strawberries, cherries, cocoa beans, licorice, matcha and pressed flowers. Generous and aromatically open, with tightly-knit tannins interwoven with layers that keep on giving. Evolves to roasted tea leaves and minerals. Medium and fresh. From organically grown grapes. Try in 2024.” 95 points James Suckling (Dec 2022)

“Lustrous ruby with orange tinges. Fine and subtle and a little subdued with just a suggestion of new oak. Succulent but tight, while the tannins are still unsettled. Very long and with hidden depth. Great interpretation of the vintage with plenty of youthful fruit as well as freshness, but much too young to approach. All Sturm und Drang right now.” Jancis Robinson.com – 17++ points (Walter Speller – Dec 2022)

“Lavender and scented broom mingle with pepper, expanding with sumptuous tannins that hem in plentiful fruit, perky acidity that keeps it lively, and a long and violet-tinged finish. It definitely carries the stuffing and structure for ageing. Drinking 2024-2036.” Decanter – 95 points (Michaela Morris – Nov 2022)
