Isabel Estate Chardonnay 2016, Marlborough

isabel chardonnay 2016 - wimbledon wine cellar

17 points, Jancis Robinson: "Gosh. By NZ standards this is an antique! ... Pale green-gold. ...this seems ever so slightly reduced, then soft and gentle on the palate. That characteristic NZ acidity is fading. By no means unpleasant! A really very nice alternative to a well-made Côte de Beaune white. Fresh and bright-fruited with that very slight struck-match quality." Drink 2018 - 2023.

"Such a delightfully mature wine ... It really is exceptional." Jancis Robinson

NOSE: Complex aromas – ‘sweet nuttiness’, ripe figs and a touch of melon followed by nougat, caramel and a creamy richness.

PALATE: Exudes bright, ripe fruit with upfront acidity. Mid palate displays elegant flavours of white peach and almond biscotti – complimented by our distinctive minerality, the hallmark of Isabel; this is wine of great depth, richness and texture.

Isabel produce their Chardonnay from the very first vines planted in the north-eastern corner of the estate in 1980. The intensely concentrated grapes result in a wine of elegance, complexity, depth and class. Characters of white nectarine complemented by intriguing gun smoke and flint, vanilla bean and French oak toastiness will delight even the fussiest of Chardonnay devotees.
