“Pure Tempranillo, with lovely big juicy succulence. Very pure with minimal oak flavour – a different style to the La Rioja Alta caricature. Cherry and aniseed, with nice ripe tannins. Good length, and a fresh finish.” 92 Points, David Williams, Decanter
This week (Jan 2021), Decanter highlighted ten Rioja Crianzas that best expressed the quality and excellent value of the appellation. Our own Finca San Martin, made by La Rioja Alta S.A., was at the top of the list with 92 points!
Finca San Martin is from the Rioja Alavesa subzone, where chalk soils and slightly more distance from the sea combine to produce a riper, rounder style of Tempranillo. Rioja Alta’s property here, Torre de Oña, is an innovative Chateau-concept that produces a more modern style of Rioja with a fuller body with the addition of French oak and less oxidation – but still noticeably a Rioja Alta wine!
