Burgundy 2020 en Primeur now available!
Keeping it in the family and making wines of a lifetime... Few names are more respected amongst the cognoscenti of Burgundy than that of Patrick Javillier, whose estate in Meursault we have been visiting for close to twenty years. Given that Meursault is one of the world’s capitals of great, ageworthy white wines, this is some reputation indeed. You cannot fail to be charmed by Patrick. This is a winemaker who who clearly adores his craft, his village and always has a zest for life. Mild mannered and gentle, yet with his own distinct personality, the wines of Domaine Javillier are a reflection of the man. He has now handed the mantle to his daughter Marion, who continues this family’s journey of fine wine making and innovation along with her brother-in-law Pierre-Emmanuel Lamy.
Fourteen appellations are produced by the domain from 11 ha. of vineyards in 5 communes of the Côte d’Or department, ranging between Puligny-Montrachet and Pernand-Vergelesses Gorgeously well-sited parcels, patience and a meticulous eye for detail continue to make Domaine Javillier the pundits’ choice. While there is superb quality throughout the range, the two cuvées of Bourgogne particularly stand out. They are given the same treatment as Javillier’s village Meursaults, with extended élévage on the lees and ageing in top quality French oak – and really do give a flavour of Meursault’s intensity and power in an easilyaccessible package. The reds should not be overlooked either - the family has a gentle, elegant hand with Pinot too. They are delicious early drinking wines that again offer exceptional value.
JAVILLIER IN 2020
The difficulty in 2020 is finding sufficient superlatives to describe the quality of Domaine Javillier’s wines. Rich, sumptuous and textured, yet with sensational poise, balance and mineral complexity, the 2020s are both almost irresistibly approachable in youth and also inimitably capable of ageing. Like many growers, the domaine will not
produce anything like the same volumes in 2021. Do not miss these wines of a lifetime.
