Domaine Desaunay-Bissey

Bruno Desaunay - Wimbledon Wine Cellar

We were first introduced to Bruno Desaunay almost 20 years ago and were astounded by just how good his wines were. Precise, packed with fruit, he and his father in law looked for non interventionist pure styles. This is a Grower who had just caught the limelight and we were delighted for Bruno that several journalists such as Greg Sherwood, MW and William Kelley, had taken his wines to their heart.

Sadly, earlier this year (2023), Bruno passed away. I mention him firstly as a wonderful man and secondly as a vigneron as he loved people, especially his close family and friends. He always had a smile and a welcome for everybody, whether he knew them or not. Bruno led a simple life and only had good words for everybody. I was surprised how many people attended his funeral. The church at Flagey was packed as was the outside. It was surprising to see how many young people were there too, as he was obviously so well liked in the village. Many of Burgundy's good and great, including  Christophe Roumier, came along on this cold morning to pay their respects. He was buried on a bright , sunny day in the local cemetery and lies with different strands of many Tardys and Fourriers ..so good company !

2021 will be the last vintage that was completed entirely by Bruno, with 2022 seeing him not obviously being able to finish the vinification. We wish Richard and Christine good luck for  the future. With the great team that they have and with great vignerons such as Bizot and Lachaux offering assistance, I'm sure that the future is bright for young Richard. With so much knowledge from Bruno being passed down and with some enviable holdings, the future can only be bright and the domaine will, in my opinion, go from strength to strength.

There is much interest in this release as Bruno had over the past five years begun to achieve the high scores and accolades...selling out each year....

Bruno's Chambolle Musigny and Gevrey Chambertin have to be some of the best value wines of the vintage and the Echezeaux and Grands-Echezeaux never fail to impress.

“A true star on the rise.” Greg Sherwood, MW

"....when you discover a ‘new’ producer making such unbelievably fine wines, you are almost inclined to keep the secret to yourself, such was the excitement. Desaunay-Bissey is undoubtedly heading towards greatness and within a very short period of time, his wines will be among the most allocated and sought -after in the Cotes de Nuits.” Greg Sherwood, MW

William Kelley at Robertparker.com: "This was my first encounter with the wines of Bruno Desaunay-Bissey which exploits an interesting portfolio of old-vine parcels and avoids excesses of new oak and extraction. The wines are very true to their appellations, with creamy old vine concentration, an excellent balance. A visit here will be high on my agenda during my next visit to Burgundy."

While the wines remain great value for money, they are now coming to widespread notice, and since 2018 have needed to be allocated.

All these wines are in bond prices.
