Bizios Estate, Nemea

The Bizios Estate

At a London wine trade tasting in April 2017 Jancis Robinson reviewed Bizios as one of only four of her favourite growers in Greece. She was delighted with the 2011 Agiorgitiko and gave Bizios a wonderful review in the Financial Times weekend magazine (June 17/2017 edition).

2013: We discover Elias Bizios and are astonished with his full flavoured, plump agiorgitiko.

2014: Elias prepares his first ever shipment of agiorgitiko for London.

2015: Wimbledon Wine Cellar purchases 5 acres of prime agiorgitiko vineyards in the best spot in Nemea - the magical Asprokampos (arriving March 2018).

2016: Wimbledon Wine Cellar purchases 7.5 acres of prime Malagousia and Chardonnay vineyards also in Asprokampos (arriving March 2017).

We do not view ourselves as "wine angels". We are wine lovers and enthusiasts. Asprokampos is known to the locals as "Little Tuscany". When you visit there, you can see why; it's simply magical. Whilst Elias has a wonderful landscape to work in, he needed help in increasing his production as it was tough making a living from such a small vintage each year. Purchasing these vineyards has always been a dream for him as they adjoin his current holdings; thus easy to farm. It has allowed him the freedom to do what he is just so good at, making wine.

If you are ever in Nemea, we can organise a tasting at his tiny but excellent cellar. It's always a joyous event to meet him and his charming wife Areti, who exchanged a professional career in New York for this sleepy beautful hamlet in Nemea where she assists Elias in between looking after their young son. They love receiving visitors. After a tasting there you must ask Elias to arrange lunch or dinner at Mangas Taverna for simply the best grilled lamb ever. A beautiful spot in the valley.

Unpretentious... all the vegetables are from their own land and the meats are their own too. You can even take your own wine. I never miss lunch here. Another of our wonderful Greek growers has had a raving review from Greg Sherwood, Master Of Wine and author of the well-respected A Fine Wine Safari. The Bizios Aspros Kampos Chardonnay Malagouzia Blend 2016 has received a Wine Safari scre of 91/100 which is wonderful to hear. Noteable comments include: "With premium Greek wines once again riding high in the global wine trade, this is a super addition for enthusiasts."
