Just released... Fattoi's stunning Brunello di Montalcino 2012 Riserva
James Suckling "A rock star 2012 vintage for Brunello di Montalcino"
With the Burgundy 2016 campaign behind us we are now moving on to the delights of the 2012 vintage in Brunello. The vintage has been generally hailed as a success, however it is variable. Altitude is certainly going to play a deciding role in many of our choices, as top growers who own vineyards on the highest slopes have produced the finest wines.
The Consorzio Del Vino Brunello di Montalcino awarded the 2012 vintage a 5 star rating.
Wine Enthusiast "Though quality is high quantity is not. 2012 will be remembered as the smallest crop in the last 10 years."
Jancis Robinson "I recently had the great pleasure of tasting 44 of the finest examples from the recently released 2012 vintage and was thoroughly impressed, not least because they combined excellent concentration of fruit, tannin and unexpectedly high levels of refreshing acidity."
James Suckling "Fans of Brunello are in for a treat with the 2012 vintage. I tasted about 100 wines in October in a blind tasting in Tuscany and was impressed with their beautiful aromas, vibrant fruit, lively acidity and ultra fine tannins. These sangioveses are much more precise and finer than the bolder and riper 2011's. They have more in common with the legendary 2010 vintage and are more like the 2004's, a harmonious and gorgeous year for Brunello."
We were introduced to the Fattoi family some 10 years ago and have been thoroughly impressed with the quality and dedication shown by this family to their tiny but excellent vineyard. Lucia Fattoi helps her father Leonardo produce a classically rich and yet sensitively balanced Brunello which is the envy of many of their neighbours. From our early tastings at the vineyard we knew that we had a mascular, rich blockbuster on our hands. The 2007's and 10's that we have shipped have also been reviewed as some of the best Brunellos. With Decanter magazine telling us all in their last edition that Italian prices are set to rocket for the classics of this country Fattoi still represent incredible value as they still fly just under the radar. 2012's are a fantastic addition to anyone's cellar. Having tasted the Riserva throughout its journey so far from barrel to bottle we are delighted to be introducing this highly acclaimed wine to the UK. With the vines age being at least twenty years and the vineyards standing at a glorious 350 to 450 meters above sea level, the wine is a must for a sangiovese afficionado.
Wine Spectator "Leonardo Fattoi's 2012 Riserva displays dark cherry fruit. Blackberry and plum build the wines profile of primary aromas. Added complexity is given by spice, leather and earthy tones of wild mushroom of forest floor. The fruit is soft and succulent giving the wine an immediately approachable style with tannins that are firm but not astringent."
The wine will be shipped at the end of April and is offered under bond or duty paid and delivered. For those of you who wish the wines to be stored under bond and do not have a storage account with us just call and we will set one up for you. As you can see from the reviews above, these wines are simply in a league of their own.
More Italian offerings will be out soon.
